For an article for Well+Good, Robert Alesiani, PharmD, BCGP, Chief Pharmacotherapy Officer, shares 5 considerations for individuals to keep in mind when it comes to the safe use of medications. He addresses how to properly store medications, why timing is important when taking multiple medications a day, and why individuals should not anticipate success or failure of a therapy based on what may have occurred after someone else’s experience with that medication. He also discusses over-the-counter medications and “natural” products.
As Dr. Alesiani notes, “‘Natural’ products are not necessarily healthier, safer, or more effective than the same drug, vitamin, or other supplement produced in a lab. For instance, several studies of the herb, Echinacea, have not provided any evidence of benefit against the common cold, yet many advocate and take it for that indication.”
